Position Summary

Education

The qualified applicant will hold at least a high school diploma and have or be eligible for a New York State Level One (1) Teaching Assistant Certificate. It is expected that the candidate will pursue Teaching Assistant Certification as soon as possible if not already certified, and will show evidence of this upon request. The candidate will be expected to achieve Level Three (3) Teaching Assistant Certification, maintained with Professional Development every five (5) years through the New York State Education Department.

Experience

Prior experience with developmentally disabled children in educational or recreational settings is preferred but not required. This position reports directly to the classroom teacher.

Essential Functions

• Assist the classroom teacher in all daily routines.
• Supervise a classroom group by implementing lesson plans in the absence of the teacher.
• Be familiar with all aspects of the classroom routine and the individual needs of children.
• Conduct small groups and work with children on specific goals with the teacher's assistance.
• Supervise toileting, playground, lunch, and student arrival/departure activities.
• React quickly and appropriately to emergencies such as accidents or illness.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the teacher, including participation in parent conferences when appropriate.
