Job summary

SWCAP Head Start is hiring an Assistant Teacher to support developmentally appropriate learning experiences and foster positive relationships with children and families. You will work with classroom staff to implement activities, monitor health and well-being, and help create a nurturing environment aligned with Head Start standards.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, reliable transportation, and completion of an ECE-related course or CDA progress within required timelines;

Qualifications

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Access to reliable, licensed, insured driver and transportation.
  • Completion of one WHFS-approved non-credit course in early childhood education, or completion within six months of hire.
  • CDA credential or enrollment in a CDA program within 30 days of hire, with the credential obtained within two years OR an associate degree in Early Childhood Education or enrollment in a program leading to an associate degree.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate lesson plans and activities that support children's cognitive, social-emotional, language, literacy, self-help, safety, nutrition, and fine and gross motor development.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment.
  • Assist with child observations, assessments, lesson plans, newsletters, and other required documentation.
  • Use positive reinforcement and redirection to support children's behavior and social problem-solving skills.
  • Build positive relationships with families and encourage parent involvement in the classroom.
  • Welcome children each day and help monitor and document their health and well-being.
  • Support children with daily routines, including meals, rest, toileting, and dressing.
  • Engage children in reading, art, music, and other age-appropriate activities.
  • Provide active supervision and maintain accountability for children throughout the day.
  • Help clean and sanitize the classroom and toys as needed.
  • Assist with the safe transportation of children according to agency policies when directed.

Education

Description

Requirements

Preferred but not required...
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Experience supporting developmentally appropriate activities and classroom routines.
  • Experience working collaboratively with teachers, families, and other staff.
  • Familiarity with early childhood education practices and Head Start programming.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly lift and/or move equipment up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle in various weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, unpleasant odors, and dirty working conditions.
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
