Assistant Swim Team Coach
POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Responsible for providing quality instructional training / coaching to program participants. Persons in this position must closely adhere to the YMCA of the USA guidelines for competitive coaching and swimming.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists the lead coach with a specific practice group, including but not limited to design and implementation of a training plan, supervising swimmers and practices and all on-deck activities
- Enforces team policies such as attendance, behavior, etc.
- Assists Lead Coach with daily practices and swim meets.
- Keeps control of behavior of swimmers at all times, and if necessary, communicates behavioral issues to parents/guardians.
- Adheres to and is on time to all scheduled practices
- Ensures safety by communicating and enforcing any pool rules, policies, and guidelines at participants’ comprehension level.
- Assists in keeping accurate records on each swimmer evaluating him/her at the beginning and end of the session.
- Communicates effectively to both children and their parents/ guardians.
- Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.
- Must be able to meet the physical and emotional demands of the job including being able to get into the water for training and instruction.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment. Removes any hazardous obstacles and reports unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.
- Provides an emotionally secure environment for participants.
- Holds the aptitude and attitude for coaching all ages and levels of swimming ability.
- Promotes aquatics and the YMCA mission and core values.
- Communicates to direct supervisor any concerns, needed repairs, or incidents that may need follow-up.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Minimum 16 years of age
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Certification requirements include CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and a current Lifeguard certification is recommended but not required.
- Must obtain YMCA Swim Coach Certification and Principles of Swimming and Diving.
- Safe Sport Certification and Safety Training Certifications as required.\
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Must possess quality knowledge of competitive swimming organizations, strokes, starts, turns, and other related skills.
- Experience with Team Unify software platform preferred.
- Position involves weekend or extended hours and travel to offsite events.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, stoop, reach overhead; maintain the strength and agility required to supervise and demonstrate program activities
- The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first aid techniques.
- Must have the ability to lift various materials up to 25 lbs occasionally and the ability to properly extract individuals from the pool(s) to the deck as needed in rescues.
- The employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and possibly interpret people and situations; analyze and solve problems.
- May interact with members and participants who are distressed or dissatisfied.
- Exposure to pools, wet and very humid conditions, and chemicals.
- The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to loud depending upon the programming that is occurring at the time.
