Job description

The Assistant Swim Coach supports the head coach by sharing responsibility for the success of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving program at Millsaps College. This position supports Millsaps’ NCAA Division III intercollegiate swimming program including recruiting, training, and coaching athletes, assisting with fundraising to augment the program budget and providing support to the Department of Athletics. The Assistant Swim Coach reports directly to the Head Swim Coach.

This position works on-site in Jackson, MS and requires regular evening and weekend work and travel.

Job Duties

• Comprehend the NCAA Division III philosophy emphasizing academics and athletics;
• Comply with all NCAA Division III, Southern Athletic Association (SAA), and Millsaps College guidelines;
• Recruit and evaluate high school and college athletes within college admissions and NCAA Division III guidelines;
• Provide in pool coaching of athlete skill development;
• Accept game-day administration obligations each semester, if necessary;
• Assist in the planning of practice sessions;
• Monitor academic progress by student athletes involving grade reports, study skill development, and counseling;
• Coordinate team travel and logistics, including vehicles, lodging, and meals;
• Assist in scouting opponents;
• Assist with fund-raising programs to augment operations budget;
• Maintain parent and alumnae communication;
• Assist with equipment maintenance;
• Participate in various other areas of interest for the College and Athletics;
• Accept additional duties assigned by the Athletics Director and Head Coach.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Management, Kinesiology, or a relevant field, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
• 1-3 years of College coaching experience or playing experience.
• Desire to continue fostering a strong academic and athletic program through creative and educational means.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Able to work in team environments and individually.
• Proven ability to promote a positive team environment and cultivate good morale.
• Highly organized, creative problem-solver who takes initiative.

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds without assistance.
• Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license.
• Must be able to traverse college campus and climb stairs.
• Occasional stooping, bending, lifting and reaching are required.
• Manual dexterity needed for demonstrating proper form and technique, participating in team practices and other repetitive tasks.
