Job summary

Creative Dining Services, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is seeking an Assistant Service Manager (Front of House) to help lead daily dining operations at Calvin University. You will support the Service Manager, develop the service team, and ensure guests enjoy a welcoming dining experience with attractive food presentation and attentive hospitality.

• Positive, hands-on approach and the ability to remain professional in a busy dining environment.

Responsibilities

• Support and develop the service team: train and manage front-of-house staff, assist in hiring, scheduling, timekeeping, evaluations and disciplinary actions.
• Coordinate daily service: supervise service activities and help maintain efficient, fiscally responsible dining operations.
• Maintain presentation and service standards: ensure food is presented attractively, communicate menu offerings clearly, and address dietary needs.
• Promote safety and sanitation: keep areas clean and safe, maintain equipment, and support internal/external inspections/audits.
• Support marketing and special events: assist with marketing initiatives, decorations for holidays/events, and track promotional activities.
• Maintain supplies and records: monitor supplies and decorations and keep records organized.
• Build positive relationships: provide responsive customer service and maintain professional relationships with customers, staff, vendors, and community.
• Gather feedback and improve service: participate in Food Committee meetings, respond to surveys, and propose improvements to the Service Manager.

Core Responsibilities of the Assistant Service Manager

• Support and develop the service team: Assist in training and managing front-of-house staff and participate in hiring, scheduling, timekeeping, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.


• Coordinate daily service: Under the direction of the Service Manager, supervise service activities and help maintain efficient, fiscally responsible, and sustainable dining operations.


• Maintain presentation and service standards: Help ensure food is presented attractively, menu offerings are communicated clear, and customers’ special dietary needs receive appropriate attention.


• Promote safety and sanitation: Maintain clean, safe, and organized service areas, ensure service equipment is functioning and maintained properly, and support achievement of internal and external inspection/audit goals.


• Support marketing and special events: Assist with corporate marketing initiatives, coordinate decorations for holidays and special events, and maintain records of promotional activities.


• Maintain supplies and records: Monitor service supplies and decorations and help maintain accurate, organized operational records.


• Build positive relationships: Provide responsive customer service and maintain professional relationships with customers, clients, staff, vendors, and the community.


• Gather feedback and improve service: Participate in Food Committee meetings, support customer surveys and the comment card system, respond to feedback, and recommend improvements to the Service Manager andDining Services Director.

Contribute to the management team: Assist with other aspects of the dining services program as needed and model CDS's Mission, Vision, and Core Values.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

Physical Requirements

This position includes office responsibilities and active work in dining and commercial kitchen areas, including moving supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Work may involve hot, humid, or cold environments, and extended hours may be required at times.
