Job summary

Calhoun County Government seeks an Assistant Prosecutor to join its office. The role involves reviewing warrants, charging decisions, and handling a docket that includes misdemeanor and certain felony matters, under supervision.

You will prepare cases for trial, argue motions, and assist in complex matters while coordinating with law enforcement and the court system. The position requires a law degree, admission to the Michigan Bar, and at least three years of relevant prosecutorial experience.

Qualifications

• Law degree from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Michigan.
• Three years as an Assistant Prosecutor or closely related capacity.
• In good standing with the Michigan State Bar.

Responsibilities

• Reviews criminal warrant requests from local law enforcement agencies, analyzes police reports, researches the law as necessary to determine applicable statutes and charges.
• Researches and prepares criminal cases for trial, motion, sentencing, and other proceedings, including interviewing victims/witnesses and directing law enforcement in investigations.
• Appears in court for arraignments, motions, trials and sentencing to represent the Prosecutor; selects juries and cross-examines witnesses.
• Works with law enforcement to ensure investigation and reporting of cases in line with professional and judicial rules.
• Attempts to resolve pending criminal cases by negotiating pleas and sentences with attorneys, police, and parties involved.
• Drafts motions, briefs, and other legal documents; researches complex legal issues using computer tools and local resources.

Education

Law degree from an accredited law school

Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan

Three years of experience as an Assistant Prosecutor or closely related capacity

In good standing with the Michigan State Bar
