Build Toward Your Own Projects

This is an opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager who wants more than a support role.

You will join a nationally established, Chicago-headquartered design-build firm with approximately $500 million in annual revenue. The company delivers projects from initial concept through construction, supported by an in-house team of architects and experienced construction professionals.

The position has been created with a clear path into a Project Manager role. You will receive direct mentorship, increasing project ownership and exposure to every part of the construction process. The goal is to develop you into someone capable of independently leading projects, managing clients and taking full responsibility for project financials.

Mentorship and Career Development

You will work closely with an experienced Project Manager and Project Executive who will actively support your progression. Development will include:

  • A structured development plan tied to promotion into a Project Manager position
  • Regular one-on-one mentoring with senior project leadership
  • Clear expectations around the skills and experience required for promotion
  • Exposure to project financials, forecasting, contracts and client management
  • Opportunities to lead project meetings and manage subcontractor relationships
  • Increasing responsibility as your experience and confidence develop
  • Direct collaboration with the company’s in-house architects and preconstruction teams
  • Formal performance and career-development reviews
  • Access to internal training, leadership development and knowledge-sharing sessions
  • The opportunity to manage smaller projects or defined project scopes before stepping into a full Project Manager role

This is not a position where you will remain focused solely on paperwork or administrative tasks. You will be given meaningful responsibility, included in important project decisions and prepared to lead your own work.

The company delivers locally based projects valued at up to $60 million across:

  • Commercial
  • Mixed-use
  • Corporate interiors

There are no travel requirements, allowing you to build a long-term career while remaining based in Chicago.

What You Will Do
  • Support projects from preconstruction through final closeout
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, scheduling and cost control
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders and project documentation
  • Coordinate with clients, architects, consultants and subcontractors
  • Participate in owner and subcontractor meetings
  • Assist with subcontractor procurement and scope reviews
  • Work alongside field leadership to monitor schedule, safety and quality
  • Help identify project risks and develop solutions with senior leadership
  • Take ownership of defined scopes and project packages
  • Develop the financial, technical and leadership skills required to become a Project Manager
  • Build relationships with clients and project partners that continue beyond a single project
What the Company Is Looking For
  • Two or more years of commercial construction experience
  • Experience with a general contractor or design-build firm is preferred
  • A genuine ambition to progress into a Project Manager role
  • Strong communication, organization and problem-solving skills
  • An interest in learning the commercial and financial side of project delivery
  • The confidence to take ownership while remaining open to coaching
  • A bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or a related field is preferred
Culture

Although the company operates nationally, its Chicago headquarters maintains a close-knit and collaborative environment. Senior leaders are accessible, teams work closely across departments and employees are encouraged to build careers within the business.

The company invests heavily in its people through mentoring, team-building activities, regular social events and an annual company retreat. It offers the resources and project portfolio of a larger contractor without losing the personal culture of a closely connected team.

  • $800 monthly vehicle allowance
  • Four weeks of PTO
  • 4% 401(k) company match
  • 12 weeks of fully paid maternity leave
  • Six weeks of fully paid paternity leave
  • Hybrid flexibility with 1–2 days per week working from home
  • Locally based Chicago projects
  • Annual company retreat
  • Regular company events and team-building activities
  • Direct mentorship from experienced project leaders
  • Defined development plan leading to Project Manager
  • Long-term advancement opportunities within a growing national business

This position is ideal for an Assistant Project Manager who wants genuine mentorship, broader responsibility and a clear route toward running their own projects.
