Position Summary: The Department of Modern Languages at SUNY Cortland offers two tenure-track positions in TESOL at the assistant professor level, beginning in August 2025. The Modern Languages Department offers majors and minors in Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language; degrees leading to New York State teaching certification in Adolescence Education Spanish and K-12 Teaching English as a Second Language; and an M.S. Ed. in English as a Second Language, delivered fully online and asynchronously. In addition, the Modern Languages Department offers courses in ASL, French, German, Italian, Spanish, as well as Teaching English as a Second Language to the campus community.
Salary Determination:
Major Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and master’s courses in TESOL, including linguistics, English grammar, second language acquisition, and second language literacy, both in person and online; maintaining an active scholarship/research agenda; advising students; providing scheduled office hours and support to students outside of the classroom; and engaging in service to the department, school, and university. The teaching load for a TESOL assistant professor is 3 3-credit courses per semester (50% in person and 50% online, asynchronously).
Functional and Supervisory Relationships:
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. or doctoral candidate, all but dissertation (ABD) in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field; native or native-like fluency in English; demonstrated experience in using technology in teaching and learning; and demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications: Relevant teaching experience at the college level, including teaching online, asynchronous courses; background in literacy education; teaching experience in the U.S. at a K-12 public school system; proficiency in a language other than English.
