Job description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is seeking an outstanding candidate for a full-time, appointment-stream faculty position at the assistant professor level, primarily focused on teaching Mechanical Engineering.

Department Overview

The MEMS department offers an exceptional curriculum emphasizing active learning, project-based learning, and research-backed education practices. The broader School of Engineering provides multidisciplinary certificate programs in Sustainability, Data Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Simulation in Design, and Nuclear Engineering.

Responsibilities
  1. Teach up to nine credit hours per term (six courses annually), with potential summer teaching.
  2. Courses may include core thermo-fluid sciences (thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics) and other areas such as statics, dynamics, controls, mechanical design, or measurements.
  3. Competency in teaching simulation and computation is advantageous.
  4. Engage in student advising and administrative duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Dedication to teaching with the ability to articulate a teaching philosophy.
  • Applicants at the associate and full professor levels with outstanding teaching records are encouraged to apply.
Terms and Opportunities

The position is for the academic year with an initial two-year appointment, renewable. Opportunities for advancement and professional development are available within the appointment-stream track.

Department and University Highlights

The MEMS department includes four appointment-stream faculty focused on teaching and education research, and 33 tenured or tenure-track faculty with $16 million in annual research expenditures. The School offers advanced lecture rooms and a Makerspace for courses and projects.
