Job summary

Qualifications

Job Summary

Assists the school principal with evaluating and modifying instructional programs, managing human and financial resources, and ensuring a safe and secure learning environment.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Act on behalf of the principal in their absence.
  • Assist in defining the school’s mission and communicating goals.
  • Develop working knowledge of Board of Education policies and ensure compliance.
  • Assist in monitoring and improving student achievement through data analysis.
  • Assist in supervising and evaluating all school-based personnel.
  • Support continuous school improvement efforts.
  • Assist in developing a school improvement plan (SIP) aligned with instruction and resources.
  • Assist in implementing the school crisis and emergency management plan (SCEMP).
  • Coordinate and supervise student activities.
  • Provide written reports as needed.
  • Monitor maintenance and accuracy of student records including grades and attendance.
  • Plan and engage in professional activities that contribute to leadership development (AP1 & AP2 programs).
  • Assist in determining and implementing school organization, student placement, evaluation, and services to meet individual student needs.
  • Assist in business management of the school and understand local school finances.
  • Assist in supervising and overseeing school operations unique to the assignment.
  • Model cooperation, collaboration, and positive interactions with students, staff, and community.
  • Support implementation and monitoring of each student’s IEP, ensuring compliance with special education regulations.
  • Model a positive work ethic, including professional dress, good attendance, and appropriate language.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Master’s Degree in a related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
    • Effective oral and written communication with all stakeholders.
    • Recruitment and retention of a teaching and support staff that reflects the diversity of the student population and community.
    • Team building to promote high expectations for all students.
    • Ability to garner support, resources, and engage community organizations and businesses to support student achievement and development.
    • Knowledge of the curriculum of Anne Arundel County schools.
    • Ability to build a school culture that accounts for the richness and diversity of the school's communities.
    • Record of good attendance.
    • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Hold or be eligible for Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal licensure issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
Leadership Role – Management Duties
  • Interview, select, and train employees.
  • Set/adjust pay rates and work hours.

  • Maintain records for supervision.
  • Assess employees’ performance and recommend promotions.
  • Handle employee complaints and grievances.

  • Plan and control the budget.
  • Monitor and implement legal compliance measures.
