Job Description

Title Code: Assistant Principal

Provides assistance to the school principal in evaluation and modification of instructional programs. Supports management of school, human and financial resources, buildings, grounds and equipment. Establishes effective relationships with students, parents, staff, community groups and Central Office support staff. Responsible for supporting the principal in providing a safe and secure learning environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Acts on behalf of the principal in his/her absence.
  • Assists the principal in defining the school’s mission and communicating goals.
  • Develops working knowledge of and ensures compliance with Board of Education policies.
  • Assists in monitoring and improving student achievement through data analysis.
  • Assists in supervising and evaluating school-based personnel.
  • Supports continuous school improvement.
  • Assists in developing a plan (SIP) that aligns instruction and resources.
  • Assists with implementation of the school crisis and emergency management plan.
  • Coordinates and supervises student activities.
  • Provides written reports as needed.
  • Monitors maintenance and accuracy of student records, including grade reporting and attendance.
  • Plans and engages in professional activities for leadership development (AP1/AP2).
  • Assists in determining and implementing school organization, student placement, evaluation, and services.
  • Assists with business management of the school and local school finances.
  • Assists with supervision and oversight of school operations.
  • Models cooperation, collaboration, and positive interactions.
  • Supports development and implementation of IEPs and compliance with special education regulations.
  • Models positive work ethic, professional dress, good attendance, appropriate language.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years relevant successful teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Effective oral and written communication with all school stakeholders.
  • Recruit and maintain a diverse teaching and support staff.
  • Create a collaborative team with high expectations.
  • Engage community organizations and resources to support student achievement.
  • Knowledge of the curriculum of the schools in Anne Arundel County.
  • Build a school culture that reflects community diversity.
  • Good attendance record.
  • Effective communication with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Hold or be eligible for Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, and Principal licensure issued by the Maryland State Department of Education, or
  • Hold Administrator I Certificate issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Management duties include interviewing, selecting, training employees; setting pay rates; directing work; maintaining records; assessing performance; handling complaints; disciplining; planning; allocating work; controlling materials; ensuring safety; budgeting; monitoring legal compliance.
