Position Description

The University of Washington’s School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Genetics, is recruiting for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Assistant or Associate Professor on the Clinical Practice Track based at the University of Washington Medical Center to provide care to medical genetics and biochemical genetics patients. Specific rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as generally described in UW’s Faculty Code Section 24-34. The position is available effective January 1, 2027; specific start date thereafter is negotiable.

Clinical work, teaching, scholarship, and service are integral to all Clinical Practice positions. The initial appointment period will be three years, at a minimum, with eligibility for renewal thereafter. Faculty on the clinical practice track hold multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Clinical Practice track appointments are not eligible for tenure.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized clinical program. Duties will include primarily outpatient clinical responsibilities, with call coverage, and some inpatient consult work at UW Medical Center Montlake or UW Medical Center Northwest Hospital. The successful candidate will work with and teach students and trainees, including medical students and medical genetics residents. Administrative responsibilities will include serving on Division, Department, and/or hospital committees. The faculty member will work closely with the Medical Genetics Medical Director.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Evaluating, diagnosing, and providing treatment to Adult Medical Genetics and Biochemical Genetics patients in outpatient clinics and via telemedicine.
• Providing care for Biochemical Genetics patients requiring infusion therapies.
• Performing Adult Medical Genetics patient consultation in the hospital.
• Sharing call for Medical Genetics and Biochemical Genetics consultations and emergencies during and after clinic hours. This includes evening, weekend, and holiday call.
• Performing specialty procedures as delineated in clinical privileges.
• Engaging in direct patient contact or performing tasks defined by statute or recognized custom of medical practice within the bounds of state law as defined by the board of professional licensure.
• Timely completion of clinical documentation and maintenance of professional qualifications to practice medicine in the State of Washington.
• Taking part in continuing medical education (as defined by licensure) and quality assurance activities.
• Teaching students, residents, and fellows in didactic conferences in person, by teleconference, and in clinical settings.
• Departmental and hospital service, for example: by serving on committees for residency applicants, annual residency program evaluation, faculty search committee, hospital patient safety or quality programs.
• Scholarly activity contributing to improvements in one or more of the following: patient safety, quality of care, outcomes, health equity, or mechanism of human genetic conditions.

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, candidates who are board eligible or board certified in Biochemical Genetics by the start date of the appointment and who have experience in the care of biochemical genetics patients, including infusions.

Salary

The base salary range for this position will be: Assistant Professor: $17,500 – $19,167 per month ($210,000 - $230,004 annually) and Associate Professor: $19,167 – $21,667 per month ($230,004 - $260,004 annually) commensurate with experience, qualifications, and rank or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Qualifications

Applicants for this clinical practice faculty position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

• M.D. or D.O. or foreign equivalent.
• Board eligible or board certified in Clinical Genetics by the start date of the appointment.
• Excellent clinical competence, evidenced by annual evaluations or letters of recommendation evaluating candidate's performance in residency, fellowship or practice settings.
• Professionalism, evidenced by annual evaluations or letters of recommendation evaluating candidate's performance in residency, fellowship or practice settings.
• Washington state medical license & DEA licensure eligibility.
• To be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
