Job summary
WROC/RochesterFirst in Rochester, NY is seeking an Assistant News Director to support the News Director across multi-platform news, weather and sports programming. The role also serves as News Director in the director's absence.
You will mentor staff, manage departments, develop coverage strategies, and guide editorial decisions while ensuring deadlines and audience growth targets are met.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field or equivalent experience.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Critical thinker with strong content judgement and decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Assist News Director with management of News and Production Departments.
- Assist with planning, staffing, training, and evaluations.
- Contribute to hiring decisions and staff evaluations.
- Develop content coverage strategy for WROC, RochesterFirst.com and streaming app.
- Lead editorial decisions for multi-platform content operations when needed.
- Mentor staff, critique newscasts and ensure deadlines are met.
- Assign projects and monitor progress to meet targets.
- Support achievement of viewer ratings and digital growth.
- Determine programming and equipment needs for quality programming.
- Respond to coverage questions and perform other duties.
