Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage seeks an executive-level attorney to lead misdemeanor prosecutions within the Office of the Municipal Attorney. This role reports to the Mayor and serves the public and municipal employees.

You will supervise complex court proceedings, oversee case screening, strategy, and collaborate with police and witnesses. Applicants must be admitted to the Alaska State Bar and able to obtain licensure within 12 months.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Must be admitted to the Alaska Bar Association within 6 months to 1 year of hire.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States; no sponsorship will be provided.

Position Overview

Open to the general public and current municipal employees. This is an executive position, serving at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.

Department: Office of the Municipal Attorney. Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Location: City Hall, 632 W 6th Avenue.

Responsibilities

• Handle all aspects of misdemeanor prosecution under the municipal code: case screening, arraignment, evidence assessment, police, witness, and victim contact, research, motions, status hearings, and trials.
• Participate in a fast‑paced office with ample courtroom and trial experience.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• May work under a supervisory permit pending bar exam results.
• Must be admitted to the State of Alaska Bar Association within 6 months to 1 year of hire.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States; no sponsorship will be provided.

Required Documents and Certifications

• Satisfactory background check, including criminal, education, and employment history, at time of hire.
• Satisfactory credit check at time of hire.
• APSIN/NCIC certification within 30 days of hire.
• Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
• Participation in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security E‑Verify Program.
• All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference

• Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference must attach documentation of honorable discharge and meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
• Individuals currently serving in the National Guard or organized military reserves must provide proof of current service and meet the minimum qualifications.
