Job summary

Abbott in Sturgis, MI is seeking an Assistant Microbiologist I (3rd Shift, Tues-Sat) to perform environmental monitoring sampling and microbiological testing in a GMP environment. The role supports batch release, QA, and EHS compliance in a fast-paced production setting.

The position requires relevant education or experience in a GMP lab, strong attention to detail, and solid computer skills, with opportunities for training and growth within Abbott Nutrition.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma / GED.
• 1 year of college lab studies and 1 year of college mathematics and 2 years of lab experience OR 4 years in manufacturing.
• Science-related Associate's Degree with at least 1 year of lab studies and 1 year of math, and 1 year of lab experience OR 2 years in manufacturing.
• Science-related Bachelor’s Degree with at least 1 year of lab studies and 1 year of math.
• Working knowledge of GMP operations.

Responsibilities

• Display knowledge to sample EMP per department objectives.
• Apply GMP and aseptic technique in microbiological sampling.
• Test pathogens such as Salmonella, Cronobacter, E. coli, Staph aureus.
• Use aseptic technique and plating to identify organisms.
• Learn quality system items to assist batch release and QA.
• Collaborate with fellow technicians and communicate clearly.
• Prioritize tasks and complete sampling at required frequency.
• Comply with GMPs, FDA, USDA, OSHA and Abbott regulations.
• Conduct sampling aseptically and safely.
• Perform environmental sampling in production areas.
• Document all samples collected.
• Prepare tools and paperwork for sample collection.
• Complete housekeeping and waste disposal duties.
• Support Abbott’s EHS program.
