Job description

Dakota State University is seeking a dedicated and motivated Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach to support our men’s basketball program. This position plays a key role in developing student-athletes, enhancing team performance, and ensuring program success through coaching and recruiting.

About DSU Athletics
Dakota State University competes in the Frontier Conference (FC) of the NAIA . DSU currently offers 14 sports; 6 for men and 7 for women and 1 coed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and conducting practices, game strategies, and skill development sessions.
  • Provide on-court coaching during games, helping with tactical adjustments and player performance.
  • Serve as head coach for the junior varsity team.
  • Identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes, ensuring a strong pipeline of talent.
  • Establish relationships with high school and club coaches to enhance recruiting efforts.
  • Coordinate campus visits and communicate program expectations with potential recruits.
  • Support the academic, physical, and mental development of student-athletes.
  • Organize and execute fundraising activities to support the men’s basketball program.
  • Plan and manage youth camps and clinics to promote program visibility and development.
  • Ensure compliance with university, conference, and NAIA regulations.
  • Oversee equipment maintenance, including inventory, and order.
  • Coordinate team travel.
  • Manage game film recording, breakdown, and exchange for scouting and player analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of basketball coaching experience at the collegiate level preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of game strategy and skill development, and player conditioning.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required by the position.
  • Initiative to solve problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and people skills to effectively connect with student-athletes, coaching staff, and university stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL driver’s license for driving of team personnel.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Flexible benefits package – health, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, hospital indemnity insurance, flexible spending account, health savings account, health reimbursement account.
  • South Dakota Retirement System. Employees receive 6% fully matched contributions from SDRS and are vested after three years of service.
  • Paid time off – full time 12-month employees earn 15 days per year of annual leave and 14 days of sick leave per year. In addition, employees receive 11 federal paid holidays.
