Job summary

The New School's Parsons Making Center seeks an Assistant Manager to oversee daily operations of Wood and Metal Shops, Light Lab and open work areas at 25 East 13th Street. You will manage technicians and student workers, handle scheduling, training, and safety, and coordinate with the Facilities Manager to support the curriculum.

This on-site role requires hands-on fabrication knowledge, ability to lift weights, experience with Adobe CC and CAD tools, and a commitment to inclusive,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 3–5 years of relevant experience in the field.
• Flexibility to work nights and weekends with semester changes.
• Completion of required staff trainings and COF's within 6 months.
• Knowledge of CNC plasma cutting equipment within 6 months.
• Advanced knowledge of production/fabrication techniques; wood/metal work.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of the Making Center facilities (Wood/Metal Shops, Light Lab, open work areas).
• Manage full-time and part-time staff and student workers; hire, train, schedule, and provide coverage.
• Manage a fixed budget; track inventories, projects, and repairs.
• Assist with special initiatives and equipment purchases related to curriculum.
• Maintain checkout, storage, scheduling, and usage data; generate reports.
• Coordinate calendars, signage, safety orientations, and training documentation.
• Conduct health and safety trainings and safety walk-throughs.
• Ensure cross-system collaboration to improve efficiency and responsiveness.
• Provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff.
