Job summary

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Maryland seeks an Assistant General Counsel to provide a complete range of legal services to support regulatory, compliance, litigation, and employment matters. The role focuses on representing the company before regulators such as MIA and OAH.

You will advise management, analyze legislation, supervise legal resources, and assist with mediation/arbitration, subpoenas, and bankruptcy filings as needed.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree required.
• Bar admission to MD or DC within 1 year.
• Experience advising clients in health care, insurance, or related field is preferred.
• Leadership experience within a legal department or organization is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assembles files, prepares witnesses and exhibits for regulatory hearings and handles hearings independently.
• Represents the company in Maryland courts and before regulators (EEOC, MCCR, NLRB, DCOHR, etc.).
• Provides advice to management on complex regulatory, contractual, compliance, and governance matters; researches and writes legal memoranda.
• Supports Litigation, employment counsel, and Special Investigations Unit as needed.
• Independently handles mediations and arbitrations.
• Reviews subpoenas and other court documents and oversees bankruptcy claim filings to protect the company's interests.
