Job summary

The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS), Office of the General Counsel, seeks an Attorney Advisor to serve as Assistant General Counsel and support the Fire Chief in organizing, planning, and directing legal issues across investigations, legislation, policies, and Congressional/DC Council matters.

The incumbent will participate in executive staff meetings, coordinate with other agencies, and advise on departmental legal activities while communicating

Qualifications

• Requires a Juris Doctor (JD) or ABA-accredited law degree.
• Minimum four (4) years of post-JD professional legal services.
• Active DC Bar membership or ability to waive in within 360 days of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General to respond to pending litigation and ensure proper parties are informed.
• Provide pre-trial guidance to subpoenaed employees and assist Fire Chief on sensitive matters.
• Analyze court decisions and draft changes to align department practices with legal rulings.
• Review agreements with District agencies and private entities to ensure compliance with regulations.
