Job summary

NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is hiring an Assistant Environmental Engineer to review Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) and support the Unified Stormwater Rule. The role requires knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, soils, and permit compliance, with inspections during and after construction.

The ideal candidate holds a civil engineering-related degree, may have a master's, and has site-design/construction drawing familiarity.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering with 1 year of full-time environmental engineering experience.
  • Or a bachelor's in those fields plus a master’s degree in environmental engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Review site civil drawings for compliance with City rules and the Construction General Permit.
  • Understand stormwater management systems during and after construction; know hydrology/hydraulics.
  • Site inspection during construction under a Stormwater Construction Permit.
  • Site inspection for post-construction requirements of a Stormwater Maintenance Permit.
  • Communicate clearly with applicants and permittees about program requirements and penalties.
