Job summary

The Oakland Schools are seeking an Assistant Drama Coach to support a vibrant, learner-centered high school theatre program. You will help students develop collaboration, leadership, and technical theatre skills while maintaining a positive, professional environment.

Responsibilities include supervision during rehearsals and performances, assisting with production planning and design, and mentoring students in technical theatre areas such as lighting, sound, scenery, and costumes.

• Deep experience in high school, college, community, and/or professional theatre.

The Assistant Drama Coach supports the Drama Director in developing and maintaining a vibrant, excellence-focused, and learner-centered high school theatre program. The Assistant Drama Coach helps students build skills in collaboration, leadership, and technical theatre while contributing to a positive, constructive, and professional environment.

Key Responsibilities

Preferred Expertise

Candidates with experience in technical theatre are especially encouraged to apply. Preferred areas of expertise include:

• Lighting design, programming, and operation
• Sound design and operation
• Scenic design and set & prop construction
• Basic theatrical rigging and backstage operations
• Costume design and wardrobe
• Stage management and production organization

Qualifications & Skills

• Deep experience in high school, college, community, and/or professional theatre.
• Ability to work effectively with teenagers and adults in a collaborative and educational artistic environment.
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Dependability, flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to learn.
• Commitment to safety, inclusion, and positive mentorship.
• Fingerprinting and a clear criminal background check.

Schedule & Commitment

The position requires several evenings and some weekends throughout the school year. General availability of 3-6 p.m. weekdays is requested. The specific schedule will vary depending on the Hazel Park Drama calendar, which typically includes two major productions and some smaller activities.

Compensation

This role is compensated via a $4,000 stipend, per the HPEA contract.
