Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Engineering Intern/Associate to assist in distribution project design from concept through design completion. You will help prepare voltage calculations, BOMs, cost estimates, and deliverables for overhead and underground systems.

Requirements include a bachelor’s in mechanical or electrical engineering, FE exam completed or EIT preferred, and strong communication and analytical skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited program.
• FE exam completed or EIT preferred (ABET-accredited program strongly preferred).
• Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Strong communication and analytical skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and basic design software.

Description

• Assist in the design of distribution projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assist in the preparation and development of distribution voltage packages for both overhead and underground projects, including distribution equipment installation, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bill of materials, and other required deliverables.
• Perform various distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.
• Apply basic knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
• Assist with field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
• Assist with research and compiles project-related data as required by the project managers.
• Assist project team with communication regarding vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way, and outage planning.
• Assist with client presentations, reports, and visualizations to demonstrate technical results and project status.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related degree from an accredited program required.
• Bachelor Degree in Engineering or related Engineering Technology from an accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam required. ABET accredited program strongly preferred.
• Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of electrical distribution power flow preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Basic distribution design software experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.

Compensation

$80,000.00-115,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
