Job summary

HDR is seeking a Distribution Electrical Engineer in Minnesota to lead design and analysis for distribution projects including overhead and underground lines. You will prepare drawings, calculations, and reports, perform load flow analyses, and coordinate with the team and agencies to ensure code compliance.

You will act as lead engineer, mentor junior staff, and create design packages across multiple sectors such as infrastructure, renewables, and industrial.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and PE license required.
  • Minimum 3 years of project execution experience in Power Market Sector.
  • Experience with PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit.
  • Willingness to travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare drawings, calculations, analyses and designs for distribution overhead and underground lines.
  • Perform load flow analysis, contingency analysis, and coordination studies.
  • Lead Engineer for projects and SME in the area of expertise.
  • Create full design packages across Infrastructure, Renewables, Industrial, etc.
  • Mentor newer EITs to grow their careers and capabilities.
  • Coordinate with project team, agencies, and manage addenda/RFIs/COs.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports and designs for distribution overhead and underground lines.
  • Perform load flow analysis, contingency analysis, and coordination studies.
  • Serve as the Lead Engineer for projects and subject matter expert in the area of expertise.
  • Create full design packages across many projects: Infrastructure, Renewables, Industrial, etc.
  • Mentor newer EITs to grow their careers and capabilities.
In the role of Distribution Project Engineer, we’ll count on you to:
  • Coordinate the work of the power design team through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project.
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance.
  • Coordinate workload to complete the deliverable on schedule.
  • Conduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Review project documents for areas of conflict with other disciplines.
  • Write and edit project specifications.
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, requests for information (RFIs), change orders (COs), and take responsibility to incorporate agreed‑upon changes into the project documents.
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed.
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Engineers, Project Coordinators or Designers, or BIM Technicians as needed.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference given to candidates local to the Madison/Milwaukee, WI or Minneapolis, MN area.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Medium voltage design and power system study analysis experience.
  • Part of a local or national organization within the industry.
  • Previous presentation or white paper experience.
  • Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm or electrical utility.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in project execution within the Power Sector Market.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., PE or P. Eng).
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (e.g., PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture.
