Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Distribution Engineer in Denver to support design and construction of 2.4kV–34.5kV projects. You will assist in conceptual to design completion, prepare voltage packages, and perform distribution calculations under supervision.

You'll gain exposure to field inspections, data compilation, and client presentations while applying NESC standards and industry practices. This role requires a Civil/Engineering degree and FE eligibility.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited program strongly preferred.
  • Internship or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in design of distribution projects from concept to design completion.
  • Prepare distribution voltage packages for overhead and underground projects.
  • Create design sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, and deliverables.
  • Perform distribution calculations (cable pulling, voltage drop, pole loading).
  • Apply NESC and utility standards, guides, specs, procedures.
  • Assist with field inspections of overhead/underground facilities.
  • Support data collection and project reporting for managers.
  • Contribute to client presentations and project status visuals.
  • Comply with all policies and standards.

Description

The Assistant Distribution Engineer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects. The Assistant Distribution Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical distribution plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

  • Assist in the design of distribution projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.

  • Assist in the preparation and development of distribution voltage packages for both overhead and underground projects, including distribution equipment installation, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.

  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bill of materials, and other required deliverables.

  • Perform various distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.

  • Apply basic knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.

  • Assist with field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.

  • Assist with research and compiles project-related data as required by the project managers.

  • Assist project team with communication regarding vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way, and outage planning.

  • Assist with client presentations, reports, and visualizations to demonstrate technical results and project status.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related degree from an accredited program required.

  • Or Bachelor Degree in Engineering or related Engineering Technology from an accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam required.

  • ABET accredited program strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of electrical distribution power flow preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Basic distribution design software experience preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.

Compensation

$80,000.00-120,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
