Job summary

Marquette University is seeking an Assistant Director of Retail Operations to lead the Spirit Shop and its student workforce. You will guide daily retail operations, drive sales, manage inventory, and oversee event-related retail activities.

You will recruit, train, schedule, and coach a team of over 40 student employees, while ensuring high customer service standards and adherence to budgets. Evening and weekend availability is required.

  • Forecast staffing needs, allocate labor, and adjust coverage for events and peak periods.
  • Monitor performance, customer service outcomes, and sales trends; implement improvements.
  • Lead event planning for athletic and campus-wide events with cross-functional coordination.
  • Monitor payroll and budgets; advise on resource allocation and investments.

The Assistant Director, Retail Operations provides independent leadership and operational oversight for all day-to-day Spirit Shop operations. This position is responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, development, and performance management of a large student workforce. The position is responsible for making operational decisions that directly impact customer experience, staffing effectiveness, sales performance, compliance, and workforce productivity. Working with considerable autonomy, the Assistant Director develops and implements operational strategies, identifies and resolves complex business challenges, and ensures the successful execution of departmental priorities. This position serves as a key member of the Spirit Shop leadership team and contributes to strategic planning, revenue generation initiatives, operational improvements, and long-term business objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct and oversee all daily Spirit Shop operations, including retail sales, inventory flow, stockroom activities, e-commerce fulfillment, and event-based retail operations.
  • Provide full leadership responsibility for recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, performance management, corrective action, succession planning, and development of a student workforce exceeding 40 employees. Establish expectations, monitor performance metrics, and ensure accountability to departmental standards.
  • Analyze workforce needs, forecast staffing requirements, allocate labor resources, and make independent decisions regarding operational coverage to support business demands, special events, and peak sales periods.
  • Monitor operational performance, workforce productivity, customer service outcomes, and sales trends; identify opportunities for improvement and develop solutions to address operational challenges and support revenue growth.
  • Evaluate existing operational procedures and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, reduce risk, improve customer experience, and strengthen organizational effectiveness.
  • Lead operational planning and execution for athletic events, commencement, homecoming, Family Weekend, National Marquette Day, and other major university events while ensuring seamless coordination across retail, stockroom, and e-commerce functions.
  • Monitor payroll, labor expenditures, operational budgets, inventory-related processes, and departmental reporting. Provide recommendations regarding resource allocation, operational investments, and business planning initiatives.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Minimum of 4 years of retail, hospitality, customer service, workforce management, or related leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience with responsibility for hiring, coaching, performance management, and employee development.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to recruit, train, motivate, and hold employees accountable.
  • Strong conflict resolution and performance management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using workforce scheduling, payroll, and timekeeping systems.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, athletic events, and special events as needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Retail Management, Marketing, Sports Management, Hospitality Management, or related field.
  • Training in Retail management, Leadership Development and/or Customer service training programs.
  • Experience supervising student employees.
  • Collegiate retail experience.
  • Athletics, campus retail, hospitality, customer service, or event operations experience.
  • Experience using WhenToWork or similar workforce scheduling software.
  • Experience leading frontline retail operations and customer service teams.
