General Summary of Position
Reporting to the Vice President of Integrated Surgery Service, Regional Chair of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and Regional Chair of Surgical Oncology, the Assistant Director of the Integrated Surgery Service manages and coordinates the daily operational activities of the Regional Service Lines of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Surgical Oncology. Additionally, this role provides operational support to the General Surgery ambulatory practices at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The position also functions as the Regional Administrator for Quality, Safety, and Outcomes (QSO), reporting to the Vice-Chair QSO for the Integrated Surgery Service.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Directs clinical and practice operations of the MedStar Washington Hospital Center Integrated Surgery Services Faculty Practices across all sites, including collaboration with the Senior Director and Chief of Surgery to identify growth areas, plan for efficient operations, and coordinate program activities.
- Ensures the professional growth and development of all surgical clinical staff, maintaining high standards of practice and professionalism. Evaluates staffing patterns and makes recommendations for staffing levels and redeployment.
- Engages in strategic planning and forecasts future conditions and growth opportunities. Implements system-wide initiatives to meet organizational goals within the Integrated Surgery Services.
- Provides guidance to Ambulatory Practice Managers to optimize staff, equipment, and supplies use. Manages clinical operations to adhere to budgetary guidelines.
- Develops and evaluates policies, procedures, and continuous improvement strategies to enhance patient satisfaction, safety, and quality of care. Implements cost-effective plans and monitors their effectiveness.
- Prepares and monitors budgets, performs variance analysis, and reports as required.
- Manages daily operations of ambulatory practices, ensuring policies are followed and workflows are smooth. Coordinates scheduling templates and manages revenue cycle activities, including insurance verification, authorization, collections, and charge reconciliation.
- Recruits, hires, evaluates, and disciplines staff in collaboration with nursing leadership. Ensures staff training, development, and performance management.
- Implements new services and technological advancements, overseeing capital equipment acquisition.
- Oversees service authorization processes, fee reviews, charge entry, and billing accuracy.
- Leads performance improvement initiatives, prepares reports, and develops policies and procedures for areas of responsibility.
- Implements best practice models for ambulatory practice management, including training, shared services coordination, and facility management.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Services Administration, or a related field required.
- Master's degree preferred.
Experience
- 3-4 years of progressively responsible experience in hospital administration or management of a large business operation required.
Licenses and Certifications
- Membership in professional groups such as MGMA and/or ACHE preferred.
This position has a hiring range of $93,142 - $175,968.
