Job summary

University of Virginia's Department of Chemistry seeks an Assistant Director for Academic Programs to partner with faculty leadership across undergrad and graduate programs, ensuring consistent, well-run administration and exceptional student experiences.

You will own systematizing enrollment data, milestone tracking, and coordination with central offices while remaining hands-on in daily operations and policy interpretation.

Qualifications

• Excellent written and verbal communication; professional presence with students and offices
• Experience in higher education administration with ownership of academic programs at undergrad and/or graduate levels
• Ability to interpret and apply university, school, and departmental policy with sound judgment
• Experience supporting students through advising coordination, admissions, onboarding, and milestone progression
• Strong data literacy to monitor program health, trends, and drive improvement
• Ability to design or improve administrative processes and systems, not just execute them

Responsibilities

• Serve as primary support and strategic partner to the Director of Undergraduate Programs and the Director of Graduate Studies.
• Oversee admissions cycle operations for graduate applicants and support undergraduate declaration processes.
• Maintain authoritative records of student progress and flag at-risk students.
• Track degree- completion requirements and support joint graduation planning.
• Coordinate graduate recruitment events and onboarding touchpoints for undergraduates.
• Act as liaison with central offices (Registrar, GSAS, ISO, Admissions) as needed.
• Plan and manage student programming across both populations as an ongoing portfolio.
• Supervise and develop staff supporting the department's academic programs.
