Job summary

The New School is seeking an Assistant Director of Advising to lead and mentor a team within the Academic Advising unit. This role provides holistic academic guidance to undergraduate and graduate students across multiple colleges, helping with degree progression, policy interpretation, and connections to support services.

You will supervise Academic Advisors, design advising workflows, collaborate with faculty, and contribute to strategic planning and student success initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; 4–6 years of related experience with focus on student engagement and advising.
• 2 years of experience supervising or co-supervising individuals.
• Superior student services skills and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations.
• Experience developing or implementing policy as pertains to student status at a college or university.
• Strong presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new computer applications.

Responsibilities

• Provide developmental academic advising through in-person and virtual appointments to support student success, persistence, retention, and graduation.
• Guide students in academic planning, goal setting, and overcoming barriers using critical thinking and individualized support.
• Advise students on university, school, and program policies, including transfer credits and degree requirements.
