Job description

Overview

To further the purposes of the YMCA by building relationships and developing character in all YMCA constituents. Under the guidance and supervision of the Sr. Manager of Youth Development and Camp Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for providing direct supervision to a group consisting of staff and campers in a seasonal day camp. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Courage, and Inclusion.

Responsibilities

In coordination with the Sr. Manager of Youth Development and Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director shall:

1. Train and supervise staff in their responsibilities. This includes coaching staff, as well as evaluating their performance twice during the program.2. Execute the camp schedule daily. Coordinate age appropriate games to correspond with the weekly themes.3. Identify and meet each camper’s needs. This includes, learning likes/dislikes, recognizing and responding to opportunities for problem solving, interaction between campers and staff, creating great camp experiences for each camper.4. Carry out camp program objectives. This includes, establishing roles for supervising camper health, establishing roles in enforcing camp safety regulations, supervising all assigned aspects of the camper’s day, and instructing campers during emergency procedures.5. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.6. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.7. Ensures program compliance with the Department of Health as well as Praesidium Standards.8. Attend staff meetings and trainings.9. Accurately accounts for all campers in Unit. Adheres to registration requirements (including distributing and following rosters)10. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.11. Maintains positive relations with parents and staff.

Qualifications

1. Requires HS diploma or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.2. At least 20 years of age3. Previous experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting. Desire and ability to work with children.4. Previous experience in direct supervision of kids, as well as staff preferred.5. Ability to relate to one’s peer group, as well as ability to accept supervision and guidance.6. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training during Pre-Season camp trainings.7. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.8. Must possess good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.9. Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, and sportsmanship.10. Positive “can do” attitude which is demonstrated by a willingness to pitch in and help wherever needed as well as an ability to anticipate what is needed.

Physical Demands:Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
