Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country in planning, organizing, and conducting cross country practices and training sessions.
  • Provide instruction and coaching related to distance running, endurance development, race preparation, and training principles.
  • Coach student-athletes during practices and competitions while promoting development and team cohesion.
  • Assist with recruitment of qualified prospective student-athletes in accordance with NCAA Division III regulations.
  • Support academic, personal, and athletic development and foster a positive team culture.
  • Coordinate practice planning, meet preparation, travel logistics, and competition-day responsibilities.
  • Assist with home meet operations, course preparation, and event management.

The Assistant Cross Country Coach is responsible for supporting the administration and development of Brevard College’s NCAA Division III cross country program. This position assists with coaching, student-athlete development and supervision, recruiting, academic monitoring, practice and competition preparation, and team travel. The Assistant Coach will work collaboratively with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country to support the overall goals and mission of the program and the Department of Athletics. Duties may include leading workouts, providing individualized instruction and feedback, assisting with meet preparation and management, and supporting student-athletes’ academic and personal development. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country based on the needs of the program and the experience of the successful candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of cross country training, competition, and coaching principles.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to recruit, mentor, and develop student-athletes in an NCAA Division III environment.
  • Ability to assist with planning and conducting practices, workouts, and competitions.
  • Ability to monitor and support student-athlete academic progress and overall well-being.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel with the team as required.
  • Commitment to the philosophy of NCAA Division III athletics and the mission of Brevard College.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and recruiting/database software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, student-athletes, faculty, staff, and campus partners.
Preferred
  • Previous collegiate cross country or track & field coaching experience.
  • Collegiate cross country or track & field competitive experience.
  • Experience with recruiting, student-athlete development, meet management, or team travel.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, particularly as they relate to Division III athletics.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Medium work – exerts from 50 lbs of force often.
  • Subject to inside and outside conditions, repetitive motors
  • Ability to demonstrate sport-specific techniques.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel and supervise student-athletes during team travel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country in planning, organizing, and conducting cross country practices and training sessions.
  • Provide instruction and coaching related to distance running, endurance development, race preparation, training principles, and other areas consistent with experience and expertise.
  • Coach student-athletes during practices and competitions while promoting athletic development, sportsmanship, accountability, and team cohesion.
  • Assist with the recruitment of qualified prospective student-athletes through phone calls, emails, campus visits, evaluations, recruiting events, and other permissible activities in accordance with NCAA Division III and institutional regulations.
  • Support the academic, personal, and athletic development of student-athletes while fostering a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented culture.
  • Assist with practice planning, meet preparation, race entries, travel logistics, equipment management, and competition-day responsibilities.
  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of home cross country competitions, including course preparation, facility setup, meet operations, and event management.
  • Maintain accurate recruiting, compliance, roster, training, and team records as assigned.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress and encourage engagement with faculty, academic advisors, and campus support services.
  • Assist with coordination of strength and conditioning, wellness initiatives, injury prevention, and communication with athletic training staff regarding student-athlete health and return-to-play protocols.
  • Promote the cross country program through community engagement, fundraising activities, camps, clinics, alumni relations, social media, and other departmental initiatives as directed.
  • Represent Brevard College and the Department of Athletics in a professional manner at campus, community, and athletic events.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA Division III, USA South Athletic Conference, institutional, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities related to scheduling, purchasing, budgeting, data management, and other program operations as assigned.
  • Collaborate effectively with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, coaching staff, athletic training, strength and conditioning, academic support, admissions, and other campus partners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country or Associate Vice President for Athletics.
