Job summary

The University of South Alabama's Business Office is seeking an Assistant Controller to lead central accounting functions and provide strategic financial guidance to campus leaders.

This role oversees monthly, quarterly and year-end closes, capitalization and depreciation, GASB compliance, and coordination with external auditors, while supervising accounting staff and strengthening internal controls.

Open to applicants with a Bachelor's in accounting and several years of accounting experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related business field.
• Six years of professional accounting/finance experience, three in supervisory role.
• Master’s degree and CPA preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides operational leadership across central accounting functions within the University.
• Oversee daily ledger management, financial reporting, subledger operations and regulatory compliance.
• Oversees monthly, quarterly, and fiscal year-end financial close processes.
• Ensures capitalization, depreciation, and disposals per GASB standards.
• Supports bond-funded project accounting and reporting, including debt compliance.
• Coordinates with external auditors during annual financial statement audits.
• Maintains internal controls and policy alignment with governmental accounting best practices.
• Advises on financial policies, budgets, and proper accounting procedures.
