Job summary

The New School seeks an Assistant Controller to lead a team responsible for maintaining the university’s financial records. You will supervise the Accounting Director and staff, ensure timely closing of the general ledger, and support audits and financial reporting in a not-for-profit higher education environment.

Key duties include managing Workday General Ledger, ensuring GAAP compliance, preparing monthly/quarterly statements, and collaborating with FP&A to explain variances and drive

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience including five years of management.
• Higher Education or not-for-profit accounting experience, including state and federal laws and regulations.
• CPA certification.
• Experience with Workday.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the monthly close and preparation of financial statements.
• Lead the Single Audit, 403(b) audit, and financial statement audits; prepare IRS Forms 990/990-T and IPEDS reports.
• Maintain the Workday General Ledger and chart of accounts; review journal entries.
• Ensure GAAP compliance and coordinate with departments for timely fiscal closes.
• Monitor receivables and revenue recognition; develop internal controls and processes.
