Job summary

Miller Bros. Const., Inc. is seeking an Assistant Controller to support the Controller in managing daily accounting department operations in Ohio.

You will coordinate monthly and year-end close, supervise staff accountants, review financial information, and strengthen internal controls to ensure timely reporting. You will collaborate with the Controller, Payroll Supervisor, Data Analyst, and other accounting staff to improve cross-functional processes, implement new procedures, and guide

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required.
• CPA certification is preferred but not required.
• Five or more years of accounting experience.
• Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.
• Construction accounting or job cost experience preferred.
• Strong understanding of financial reporting, GL, reconciliations, internal controls, and month-end close.
• Strong leadership, coaching, and employee development skills.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities while meeting deadlines.
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
• Excellent communication with employees, management, auditors, vendors, and partners.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating across departments.
• Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily operations of the accounting department.
• Directly supervise staff accountants and accounting personnel.
• Coordinate monthly and annual financial close activities.
• Review journal entries, reconciliations, schedules for accuracy.
• Monitor general ledger activity and investigate variances.
• Assist with budgets, audits, tax support, and financial reporting.
• Prepare monthly Work In Process reports.
• Assist with cash management, fixed assets, intercompany accounting, and other functions.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, policies, and internal controls.
• Assist Controller with workload planning and coordination.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, evaluations, coaching, and development.
• Train and mentor accounting staff and promote consistency.
• Coordinate with other departments to resolve issues and improve processes.
• Identify efficiency gains and automate where possible.
• Assist with new procedures, ERP enhancements, and special projects.
• Serve as backup for Controller during absences.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned.
