Job description

Assistant Controller

Location: Trussville, AL (Fully Onsite)
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: $90,000–$110,000 Base Salary + Bonus

Position Overview

We are seeking a confident, analytical, and business-minded accounting professional to join our team as an Assistant Controller. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Senior Accountant or emerging accounting leader who combines strong technical accounting skills with the ability to communicate financial insights and work directly with executive leadership.

The Assistant Controller will play a key role in day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger activities, fixed assets, capital expenditures (CapEx), and financial reporting. In addition to managing detailed accounting responsibilities, this individual will analyze financial performance, present findings to executive teams, and provide insights that support business decisions.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working in the details while also understanding the bigger picture. The ideal candidate is well-spoken, professional, and confident when presenting financial information, with the ambition and ability to grow into a broader accounting leadership role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, asset tracking, disposals, and reconciliations.
  • Manage and analyze capital expenditures (CapEx), ensuring accurate classification, tracking, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze financial results, identify trends and variances, and provide actionable recommendations to leadership.
  • Work directly with executive leadership to discuss financial performance, explain results, and support strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations communicating financial results, trends, and recommendations to executive and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with operational and cross-functional teams to understand business performance and financial impacts.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and financial analysis.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and support internal controls and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
  • Take on increasing responsibility for accounting oversight, process improvement, and team leadership as the business grows.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Progressive accounting experience, ideally as a Senior Accountant, Accounting Supervisor, or Assistant Controller.
  • Required hands-on experience with fixed asset accounting and capital expenditures (CapEx).
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements and management reports.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate variances and interpret financial data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Confidence presenting financial information and communicating directly with executive leadership.
  • Ability to explain complex accounting and financial concepts clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to balance hands-on accounting with higher-level analysis.
  • A proactive, self-motivated approach with an interest in developing into a future accounting leadership position.
What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate can move seamlessly between detailed accounting work and executive-level discussions. They are comfortable working through general ledger activity, fixed assets, and CapEx while also stepping back to evaluate financial performance, present findings, and recommend improvements.

This person should bring a strong professional presence, sound judgment, and the confidence to communicate with senior leadership. We are particularly interested in candidates who take ownership of their work, think critically, and want to grow beyond a traditional Senior Accountant position.

Prior people-management experience is not required. We are looking for someone with leadership potential who is ready to expand their responsibilities over time.
