Job description

The Assistant Controller position reports to and supports the Controller by overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, focusing heavily on job costing, WIP reporting, and subcontractor management. This role requires a strong understanding of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, lien waivers, and construction software, often acting as a bridge between project management and finance.

Responsibilities

• Oversee financial operations including AP/AR, job cost accounting, payroll backup, and cash flow management.
• Maintain construction code costs, project financial tracking, and prepare Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
• Assists Controller by providing financial projections/accounting services and preparing growth plans.
• Identifying solutions to discrepancies in financial records.
• Creates internal controls and policies.
• Assists with developing financial strategies by forecasting capital, facilities, and staff requirements; identifying monetary resources; and developing action plans.
• Assists with developing/maintaining the system of internal accounting controls and financial reporting.
• Assists with quarterly accounting reviews, annual audits, general ledger reconciliations and tax returns.
• Maintain state registrations, business, and tax licenses, etc.
• Manage the sales tax process.
• Work with Senior Management and Operations Managers to ensure financial directives are followed.
• Provide guidance to accounting staff and act as a backup to the Controller.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or equivalent experience.
• Understanding of revenue recognition methods for construction.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, specifically in construction or development.
• Prior Construction experience, preferably within General Contractor setting.
• Experience in a management position.
• Proficiency in construction-specific accounting software, word processing, and spreadsheets.
• Well-rounded understanding of revenue recognition methods for construction.
