Our client is an organization in the Greater Twin Cities area looking for an Assistant Controller.
Our client is looking for a technically strong accounting professional with significant experience in external financial reporting and complex accounting matters. This position will have meaningful exposure to public-company reporting while also helping strengthen the organization's close, controls, and financial reporting processes. The role offers a strong growth path for someone interested in advancing into broader financial reporting or technical accounting leadership.
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Play a key role in the preparation and review of external financial reporting and related supporting documentation.
- Coordinate information and schedules required for quarterly, annual, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
- Manage reporting timelines and partner with internal stakeholders to ensure information is complete, accurate, and delivered within established deadlines.
- Research complex accounting matters and assist with determining appropriate accounting treatment under U.S. GAAP.
- Prepare and review technical accounting documentation supporting significant or unusual transactions.
- Partner with accounting leadership on the quality and accuracy of financial statements and related disclosures.
- Assist with quarterly and annual close activities, including review of account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Evaluate existing close procedures and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Strengthen financial reporting processes and reduce reliance on manual or spreadsheet-intensive activities where appropriate.
- Support the design, documentation, and effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting.
- Work closely with external auditors and coordinate supporting information for audit and reporting requirements.
- Partner with accounting and finance teams to resolve reporting, accounting, and control-related matters.
- Assist with accounting considerations related to significant transactions, new accounting guidance, and evolving reporting requirements.
- Develop scalable processes and documentation to support the continued growth of the accounting organization.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other members of the accounting team.
- Participate in special accounting, reporting, and process improvement initiatives as business needs evolve.
The Assistant Controller will possess the following:
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Public accounting experience with a Big Four or other large, nationally recognized accounting firm strongly preferred.
- Strong background in SEC reporting and public-company financial reporting requirements.
- Hands-on experience supporting the preparation or review of filings such as 10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks, registration statements, or similar external reporting.
- Demonstrated understanding of the complete external reporting process, including preparation, supporting documentation, review, and reporting deadlines.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge with the ability to research and evaluate complex accounting matters under U.S. GAAP.
- Experience working with financial statements, disclosures, and supporting reporting schedules.
- Process improvement experience involving financial close, reconciliations, reporting, or accounting controls.
- SOX and internal control experience preferred.
- Experience improving or accelerating month-end and quarter-end close processes is a plus.
- Exposure to registration statements, including S-1 filings, is highly desirable.
- Broader controllership or audit experience is beneficial.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience is preferred but not required.
- CPA preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with accounting leadership, external auditors, and cross-functional partners.
- Career interest in continuing to develop within financial reporting, technical accounting, and accounting leadership.
