Job Description
The Assistant Controller provides technical insight, operational support, and team management for the Red Tail corporate accounting function. This role is responsible for the accurate, timely review and completion of the monthly financial reports, owner and investor relations, as well as managing the monthly accounting function in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer. This position is also responsible for the direction and supervision of the assigned accounting staff. This role is expected to strengthen internal controls and financial processes, assist with external audit requests, and interface with third parties who provide accounting-related services.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Manage and review the monthly, quarterly, and annual close for the corporate entities, including account reconciliations, consolidations, and intercompany eliminations.
- Prepare and review monthly and quarterly reporting packages for ownership, investors, and executive leadership, including consolidated financial statements, variance commentary, and supporting schedules.
- Monitor corporate and departmental spend against the approved budget and review variances with department leaders.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for owner and investor reporting inquiries and prepare ad hoc analyses and presentation materials requested by the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership.
- Own the corporate reporting calendar and ensure all internal and external reporting commitments are delivered accurately and on schedule.
- Support the preparation of corporate income tax workpapers and coordinate with external tax advisors on filings for the corporate entities.
- Prepare year-end financial statements, trial balances, and supporting schedules for each corporate entity in the form required by the outside tax preparers, and record book-to-tax adjusting and closing entries.
- Track the status of entity tax filings and extensions, respond to tax preparer requests and follow-up questions, and review draft returns, K-1s, and related workpapers against the books before distribution to ownership and investors.
- Responsible for corporate cash management and treasury reporting, including monitoring cash balances, analyzing future cash flow, and managing the disbursement of funds.
- Coordinate and review year-end audit and review workpapers prepared by the accounting team and serve as a primary liaison to external auditors.
- Manage a team of accountants by ensuring that the team is operating effectively and meeting deadlines.
- Assist in evaluation and making appropriate improvements to accounting processes, ensuring that practices are relevant and adhere to policies and procedures.
- Provide training and mentoring to the accounting team.
- Utilize and administer the general ledger, consolidation, and financial reporting systems to streamline the close and improve reporting efficiency.
- Review the annual corporate budget and periodic forecasts prepared by accounting staff, consolidate results for leadership review, and ensure all budget deadlines are met.
- Support entity-level accounting for new, restructured, or dissolved corporate entities, including chart of accounts setup, intercompany relationships, and equity and distribution tracking.
- Assist in project as needed.
Experience/Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance.
- 7+ years of accounting/audit experience, with a strong preference for experience in property management or real estate fields.
- CPA preferred.
- Big 4 experience preferred.
- Strong accounting, managerial, organizational, communication, and analytical skills will be critical to the success in this position.

- Must be able to work outside the core business hours when needed.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, knowledge of relevant accounting software, Yardi experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of real estate management is advantageous.
