Job summary

MHW Search partners with a Houston multifamily investment firm seeking an Assistant Controller to oversee core financial operations across a fast-growing, multi-entity environment. You will report to the executive finance team and help maintain financial integrity while refining reporting systems for active real estate and specialty trades projects.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with emphasis on commercial construction or real estate operations.
  • Experience in ground-up construction or major capital expenditure accounting, including construction draws and lien waivers.
  • Strong job costing and WIP tracking capabilities.
  • GAAP compliance and full-cycle accounting expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise GL, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash flow forecasting.
  • Establish internal controls and coordinate audits/tax with external partners.

Job description

MHW Search has partnered with a Multifamily Investment firm in Houston with over 7000 units in their portfolio.They are looking for an Assistant Controller to oversee core financial operations within a fast-growing, multi-entity environment. Reporting directly to the executive finance team, this role plays a pivotal part in maintaining financial integrity, refining reporting systems, and driving operational efficiency across active real estate and specialty trade projects.

Responsibilities
  • Lead month-end and year-end close procedures, prepare comprehensive financial statement packages, and deliver actionable budget-to-actual variance reports.
  • Manage job costing workflows, WIP (Work-in-Progress) tracking, and job profitability analytics tailored to commercial/residential property and trade services.
  • Supervise day-to-day general ledger functions, payroll processing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash flow forecasting.
  • Establish internal control frameworks, update financial policies, and coordinate audit and tax preparation with external partners.
  • Partner with operations and project managers to streamline cost allocation, optimize enterprise software tools, and drive process automation.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with mandatory background in commercial construction, trades, or real estate operations.
  • Proven experience in ground-up construction or major capital expenditure accounting, with a strong focus on managing end-to-end construction draw requests, lender packages, and lien waivers.
  • Deep familiarity with job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) tracking, contractor billing review, and coordinating construction draws for multi-unit residential projects.
  • Advanced expertise in full-cycle accounting, and GAAP compliance.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Excel (complex financial models, advanced formulas, data analysis).
  • Exceptional communication skills with a track record of cross-departmental leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA designation or active CPA track.
  • Hands-on experience with field management software (e.g., ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, JobTread, or equivalent ERP systems).
  • Background managing financial operations across multi-site or multi-entity structures.
