Job summary

Middle Tennessee State University seeks an Assistant Cheer Coach for an 80% position within the Dean Of Student Affairs department. The role supports the Division I cheer program by teaching, coaching, and training student-athletes in cheerleading skills, safety, and game-day material, under the Head Cheer Coach.

  • Help plan and lead practices; teach stunting, tumbling, jumps, choreography, conditioning, and game-day material.

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Assistant Spirit Coach/Assistant Cheer Coach supports the Division I collegiate cheer program at Middle Tennessee State University. The primary duty of this position is to teach, instruct, coach, and train student-athletes in cheerleading skills, athletic performance, safety, team concepts, and related performance techniques within an educational athletics environment. Working under the direction of the Head Cheer Coach/Spirit Coordinator, this position helps plan and lead practices; teaches and demonstrates proper stunting, tumbling, jumps, choreography, conditioning, and game-day material; designs skill-development progressions and practice plans; evaluates student-athlete performance; and provides individualized instruction to improve performance. Administrative responsibilities, including scheduling, travel, fundraising, equipment, recruiting support, and event coordination, are secondary, incidental, and supportive of the role's instructional purpose. This is a 12-month position with an 80% full-time workload.

Required Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Required Related Experience

Cheerleading, coaching, and competitive experience required, preferably at the collegiate and/or All-Star level.

Required License/Registration/Certification

CPR/First Aid certification and completion of necessary coaching, cheer safety, risk management, or athlete-safety certifications required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by the University.

Desirable Related Experience

Ability to teach, train, and instruct student-athletes in an educational or developmental setting. Experience designing practice plans, skill-development progressions, choreography, game-day material, conditioning activities, and team instruction.

Desirable License/Registration/Certification

Cheer safety, stunting, tumbling, athlete-safety, or related coaching certifications preferred.
