Job summary

California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) seeks a Coordinator (Fire and Rescue) to support the SOC during activations. You will staff the ESF 4 desk, process requests, and coordinate task forces with partners across agencies.

The role requires reporting on Fire and Rescue activities, working in a high‑energy, office setting, with potential irregular hours and travel for emergency operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public or Business Administration or closely related field.
  • Demonstrate management/oversight experience coordinating with ICS, SEMS, NIMS and Mutual Aid.
  • Experience with FIRESCOPE, NWCG or CICCS qualifications.
  • Experience building relationships with Federal, State and Local agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Staff the Emergency Services Function 4 desk in the SOC during activations.
  • Process personnel and resource requests and prepare reports.
  • Coordinate task forces with internal and external stakeholders during responses.
  • Report out on Fire and Rescue activities.

Under the direction of the Fire and Rescue Chief and the State Operations Center (SOC) Director during activations, the Coordinator (Fire and Rescue) responds to emergencies and disasters within California. This position is responsible for staffing the Emergency Services Function 4 desk in the SOC. The Coordinator (Fire and Rescue) will be assigned to multiple all-hazard incidents, processing personnel and resource requests, preparing reports, assisting and coordinating task forces with various internal and external stakeholders during response operations. The incumbent will be required to report-out on Fire and Rescue activities.

Working Conditions

In Office: This position supports and manages the day-to-day business operations for Cal OES which is handled in an office location. This is not considered a hybrid telework position.

DMV Pull Program: Participation in the DMV Pull Program is required. The position(s) require(s) a valid Driver’s License (DL). You must answer the questions addressing your DL on your application. Ensure you provide your DL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

In the event of an emergency, employees may be contacted and requested to report to work in the event of an emergency. This contact may be outside of your normal working hours (evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays). This service may require irregular work hours, work locations other than the official duty location, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and you may be required to relocate to emergency sites.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public or Business Administration or closely related field;
  • Demonstrate management and oversight experience collaborating, coordinating and communicating with the Incident Command System, SEMS, NIMS, and the Mutual Aid System;
  • Experience with working with California Fire Service and the Rescue Emergency Mutual Aid System including FIRESCOPE, NWCG or CICCS qualifications;
  • Experience developing and maintaining relationships with various Federal, State, and Local agencies;
  • Ability to obtain consensus on direction that will ensure continuation of the development portion of projects and help ensure successful completion.
