City of Clovis is seeking a skilled journeyman in building maintenance to repair and renovate city facilities. You will perform carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and related tasks, with responsibilities including record-keeping and equipment operation.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and three years’ journeyman experience, with EPA 608 preferred. A valid CA driver’s license is required and after-hours calls may be necessary.
Under general supervision performs manual work involving journey level skills in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities, and to perform related work as required.
Positions in this classification report to the General Services Director and/or the Facilities Maintenance and Purchasing Manager.
Incumbents perform journey-level work in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities. Incumbents perform work which has variation and which allows or requires limited range of choice in application of defined methods or procedures. Incumbents receive instructions when tasks are assigned and have some latitude in selecting work methods. Work is generally reviewed upon completion for final results. Incumbents are expected to refer to the supervisor for instruction matters which do not fit a clear pattern.
Performs carpentry, HVAC, electrical, painting, plumbing, and other similar repair, alteration, installation, and renovation work to City buildings and facilities; maintains work records; operates trucks and related building maintenance equipment; keeps tools, equipment, and work place in clean and safe condition; responds to emergency calls after normal duty hours; may be called upon to perform work related to Parks Section maintenance, as determined by the supervisor.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Those candidates who best meet the needs of the operations may be invited to participate in a written examination that will be weighted at 100%. Candidates must earn a score of 70.00% or higher to be placed on the eligibility list. Applicants receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligibility list for a period of up to one (1) year.
As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen, and a background investigation.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License and good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
Veterans Preference Points may be provided if a DD Form 214 demonstrating qualifying service is submitted to the Personnel Office by the position deadline date and time.

The examination may consist of questions relative to knowledge of standard tools, methods, practices, and materials of the several trades involved in the maintenance and repair of building and facilities; prevailing building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes; hazards and safety precautions of the work involved in building maintenance; computerized record keeping methods; industrial duty HVAC systems such as chillers, boilers, water towers, and cooling units exceeding 30 tons. The examination may also contain questions regarding the ability to generate estimates of material needs; work effectively without close supervision; understand and work from general instructions and specifications, both written and oral, and to follow construction documents and sketches; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; use the tools, equipment, and materials of the several trades; climb ladders, lift equipment or materials up to 60 pounds in weight and perform heavy manual labor as needed; access computerized information and operate computer-based facility monitoring and diagnostic systems; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
