Job summary

The Town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is seeking an Assistant Building Inspector to join the Building Inspector Team. The role offers exposure to a variety of projects within a dynamic town government setting.

Responsibilities include enforcing the state building code and local bylaws, conducting inspections, reviewing permits, and addressing inquiries from the public. Candidates should have strong communication skills and relevant certification or progress toward it.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in supervision of building construction or design and zoning enforcement
• Massachusetts Local Inspector certification or eligibility within 6-12 months
• Valid driver’s license required
• Knowledge of Massachusetts State Building Code and local zoning bylaws
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

Responsibilities

• Enforces the Massachusetts State Building Code, town bylaws, and applicable regulations
• Reviews permit applications and conducts field inspections for code compliance
• Conducts periodic inspections of schools, restaurants, theaters, and other buildings
• Investigates violations and follows up on enforcement actions
• Responds to public questions about permits and codes
• Meets with contractors to review construction projects
