Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for the position of Assistant Athletic Director within a highly successful and nationally respected NCAA Division III athletic department. In the past year, Gustavus captured the MIAC All-Sports Trophy for both men’s and women’s programs, earned 16 conference championships, and continued to build on a legacy of success. Historically, the department has maintained a tradition of excellence, averaging a Top 40 finish in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings since the award’s inception. Dedicated to providing a first-class student-athlete experience, the department values leadership, collaboration, and innovation—and this position plays a key role in supporting and enhancing those efforts across 23 varsity sports.
JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Athletic Director plays a key role in advancing the strategic vision of the athletic department. This individual will provide leadership support, foster a positive and inclusive work environment, and collaborate with approximately 700 student-athletes across 23 varsity sports alongside a dedicated athletics staff. They will be instrumental in enhancing the student-athlete experience, ensuring alignment with institutional and NCAA standards, and contributing to the effective planning and execution of departmental operations. Additionally, this position includes leadership responsibilities in one or more core areas, based on the candidate’s experience: Compliance, Event Management, and Student Life.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Serve as a member of the Athletics Senior Leadership Team, providing strategic guidance and evaluation of departmental initiatives.
• Support the Athletic Director in advancing Title IX compliance and promoting gender equity, including active participation on relevant committees and initiatives.
• Coordinate departmental professional development efforts to encourage staff growth and excellence across the program.
• Assist the Athletic Director with oversight of staff, including mentorship, communication, and workflow support.
• Contribute to budget planning, fundraising, departmental policy development, personnel hiring, and coach evaluation processes.
• Represent Gustavus on assigned campus committees and at the MIAC and NCAA level, including MIAC Athletic Director Council meetings, and NCAA conferences.
• Lead or assist in one or more of the following areas, depending on qualifications and expertise:
Compliance: Ensure adherence to NCAA, conference, and institutional regulations through education, monitoring, and reporting.
Event Management: Oversee the planning and execution of home athletic events, including MIAC and NCAA championships.
Student Life: Advance student-athlete development through programming focused on leadership, academic success, and well-being.
