Job description

Assistant/Associate Professor, Clinical Pathology, Academic Clinician

University of Pennsylvania: School of Veterinary Medicine: School of Veterinary Medicine - Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine
Location: Philadelphia
Open Date: Feb 12, 2025

Description:
The Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is one of the nation's busiest veterinary teaching hospitals, managing over 33,000 small animal patients annually. Located in the vibrant University City neighborhood of Philadelphia, the hospital is within walking distance of Penn Medicine, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute, fostering opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The clinical pathology laboratory supports a diverse caseload, including small and large animals, zoo species, and research cases. With excellent clinical follow-up and histopathologic correlation, the laboratory provides an ideal environment for honing diagnostic skills. The team includes two other clinical pathologists, two residents, and a highly skilled group of 10 technicians, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

The University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Academic Clinician (AC) track. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative team of clinical pathologists, residents, and laboratory technicians in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine.

The successful candidate is expected to have history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator. Members of faculty in the Academic Clinician (AC) track faculty are primarily devoted to clinical service in the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Time away from clinical service is used for professional development, citizenship to the Department, and didactic teaching. Developing or maintaining an independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track and is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion. However, faculty on this track may pursue individual research projects and support research requiring clinical pathology expertise, provided these activities do not detract from excellence in clinical service and teaching. Faculty AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years. Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available.

Applications are being accepted immediately. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret cytology and hematology specimens and prepare timely pathology reports.
  • Actively contribute to diagnostic case work-ups from a clinical pathology perspective.
  • Teach and mentor veterinary students, house officers, and clinical pathology residents.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to laboratory personnel in specimen processing and assessment techniques.
  • Participate in quality assurance and control programs within the clinical pathology laboratory.
  • Assist with the development and refinement of laboratory methods and procedures, including immunocytochemistry.
  • Contribute to departmental rounds, continuing education, and the development of a new clinical rotation in the updated curriculum.
  • Optionally pursue individual research projects and support research requiring clinical pathology expertise.

    The successful candidate will:

  • Play a vital role in training clinical pathology residents and shaping the residency program.
  • Assist in expanding diagnostic services within the clinical pathology laboratory.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative teaching initiatives.
  • The University of Pennsylvania offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including options for retirement savings and tuition benefits for spouses and dependent children.

Philadelphia is a vibrant urban center with abundant cultural, recreational, and dining opportunities. The city is close to New York and Washington, D.C. and features beautiful parks such as Wissahickon Valley Park and Valley Forge National Park.

    Qualifications:
  • DVM/VMD or equivalent degree.
  • Board certification in veterinary clinical pathology (ACVP or ECVCP). Board-eligible candidates (e.g., sitting for boards in 2025) will also be considered.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to providing high-quality diagnostic services and collaborative teamwork.
