What you will do The CO2/ Inergen Assembler works under the direction of the Standard Product Supervisor. The Supervisor schedules the work, but the CO2/Inergen Assembler works independently. Following a defined assembly procedure and using prints, this employee assembles a variety of component parts to make up CO2 Fire Protection Systems. Components include CO2 cylinders, Inergen, tubing, actuators, sensors and switches. This employee must also use Bridgeport boring machine to drill and bore various CO2, Inergen and low-pressure CO2 nozzles. He/she assures quality and type of components by checking tolerances, rate of rise, electric and pneumatic actuators and conducts pressure and water testing on cylinders and valves (up to 6000 psi). The assembler works on Returned Material Authorizations (RMS's). Job duties involve production of a multitude of parts (many of which are low volume production items and scheduled infrequently), keeping and recording various records and 100% Inspection Forms according to ESTP, ESMP, ESRP, and ESQP Books. The assembler fills government records and production orders and stamps employee identification on valves. This employee must have valid Tyco forklift license and will move parts on the 2nd shift. This position requires Associates placed in the position to successfully complete specific training. These training requirements can be located on the Marinette Operations Training Matrix. The company reserves the right to rotate employees to other departments or work assignments within the organization as needed based upon skill set, production needs, etc.

How you will do it

  • Receives production orders and parts from Standard Product crib or picks up parts for job out of KanBan System. Selects proper blueprint for job. Checks for accuracy of parts against the print and sets up the various equipment necessary to produce the component. Fills out 100% Inspection Forms when required and SPC (Statistical Process and Control Forms).
  • Valves and fills CO2 cylinders ranging in weight from 5 to 300 lbs. on semi-automatic and manual machines. Cylinders are weighed on electronic scale and stamped with correct weight. Fill weight tolerances may be as close as + or -2 ounces. The operator must be familiar with the filling procedures of approximately eighteen (18) different cylinder valves. As part of the fill procedures, nitrogen may be used for valve closing or other gases may be added for purposes of leak testing or winterization. Several different sealants and lubricants such as Loc-Tite pipe dope and various greases are used during assembly of CO2 System/Inergen components. Operator also responsible for dumping of Inergen/CO2 gas and repair of Inergen/CO2 valve leakers.
  • Operates and sets up CO2 fill machine, jib crane, D.C. electric power supply and multimeter, drill, manual and hydraulic presses, gas operated torches and band saw. Sets up Bridgeport boring machine for drilling various CO2, Inergen and low-pressure CO2 nozzles. Occasionally must fabricate jigs or fixtures for specific jobs. Must have knowledge and skill to operate various power tools (hand drills, grinders, pneumatic impact wrenches and so forth). All set‑ups require cross‑referencing with tool book (T#s) to locate proper fixtures for specific jobs.
  • Assembles a variety of cylinder valves such as flood valves, AP‑8, Max, VFN, CV‑90 CO2, CV‑90 Inergen, CV‑90 Nissho and non-UL types, also assembles new product line CV‑98 CO2, CV‑98 Inergen and CV‑98 Nissho. Operators must calibrate Torque wrenches every 30 days.
  • Assembles a large variety of control components such as actuators, pneumatic actuators, rate‑of‑rise, time delays, pressure switches, detectors, various types of check and directional valves. Uses a variety of sealants such as Loc-Tite and pipe dope as well as a variety of greases and lubricants. Assembly of many components requires the placement of O‑rings, springs, small screws, and bolts along with many other small parts. Assembly of check valves requires the use of lapping compounds. Many components have electronic components (i.e., circuit boards, wires, switches) as in CV‑98 actuators, pressure switches, electrical high force lathes and other assemblies. Due to the variety of components, not all components have assembly fixtures. Therefore, assembly without a fixture requires a degree of ingenuity on the assembler’s part.
  • Working from blueprints and FP's, operator sets up Bridgeport boring machine for drilling of Inergen nozzles, orifice plates, V‑nozzles, low pressure CO2 nozzles and foam chamber plates. Blueprint is checked to drill to proper tolerance and specifications as close to .003. Also, CO2 nozzles, including teflon, cone and baffle nozzles are drilled using drill press various jigs and presses, manual and hydraulic.
  • Routine tests performed include Water bath, leak testing of CO2 and Inergen cylinders, hydrostatic testing of valves and hoses using CO2 and nitrogen with pressures up to 6000 psi., air and nitrogen gas, testing of valves, time delay time testing, electrical continuity and voltage integrity of pressure switches and CV‑98 actuators.
  • Brazes copper, brass, steel, and stainless‑steel components using acetylene and propane torches. In addition, soft soldering is required for "all copper" siphon tube assemblies.
  • Performs inspection of own work with the use of various gauges and measuring instruments such as dial depth, electronic dial depth, digital calipers, torque wrench, hydrometer, ohmmeters, flowmeter, and test fixtures to test down‑stream pressure. Also fills out proper inspection forms required for job and files inspection forms and other government paperwork where required. Will check with QC inspectors, regarding hold points on production orders where needed.
  • Package/crates Inergen and CO2 components for shipping. Packages CO2 and Inergen cylinders for stock. Serial numbers must be recorded per FP numbers for certification. Attaches proper label and any special tags needed. Packages nozzles according to FP's.
  • Engraves plastic nameplates on engraving machines for components on systems. Stamps employee identification number or letter on components when needed.
  • Operates a lift truck on 2nd shift when needed to move material and on occasion, in the absence of a Material Handler, to move material to and from the work area.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

He/she should have experience with hand and powers tools. The employee uses decimals and fractions in stamping and weighing operations and records procedures as part of the job. This position requires judgment in order to plan and perform work, make decisions as to the sequence of set‑ups, operations, processes, and quality within the limitations of recognized UL/FM and Ansul standards. Judgment is required in leak test operations. Work is performed using prints, work instructions and tool reference book for set‑ups. An average of thirty (30) with up to one hundred (100) part numbers may be on a print. Many of the parts look alike and some go together one way and not another. This person determines whether CO2 or oxygen that have escaped from components being tested. The employee is expected to work out own problems and troubleshoot components or to rework components to specifications as prescribed on print or work instructions.

The completion of inspection reports and government paperwork may be required to document test results. A degree of ingenuity required when a fixture is not available during assembly. The assembler torques a regulator up to 400-inch pounds and maneuvers valves which can weigh up to 226 lbs. This position handles jigs without aid of crane and works frequently with light to average weight material (1-55 lbs.). The assembler will conduct repetitive functions as a part of the job. He/she with arms over shoulder height to install sleeves on cylinder. Continuous mental or visual attention is required in assembly operation to ensure parts are assembled in proper sequence. Close attention is also required in leak tests when checking for bubbles. The assembler must exercise care when working with brass parts.
