Job summary

Boston Children's Hospital seeks an interpreter to provide oral and signed interpretation and translation services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, families, and providers across the hospital.

The role includes training hospital staff on cross-cultural communication, scheduling appointments, arranging freelance services, and maintaining records. A Bachelor's degree and CI/CT certifications are required, with a minimum of two years of medical interpreting experience preferred.

Job description

Position Summary:

Provides oral and signed interpretation, and written translation services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, families, and providers throughout the Hospital. Conducts training for hospital staff on cross cultural communication and related subjects. Assists with scheduling appointments for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, families and staff. Arranges for freelance services not covered by department staff, as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Interpreting for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and families and providers, and for patients and families with limited or no spoken language proficiency in their interactions with care providers and other hospital personnel. Interpreting written materials for complex and/or sensitive medical and personal information, including diagnostic and surgical procedures, treatment plans, medical histories and medical, social and psychological assessments. Assisting patients in scheduling appointments, resolving billing problems and other related matters. Identifying, assessing and facilitating understanding of cultural differences impacting communication
• Providing intake coverage, receiving, triaging and scheduling requests for interpreter services for Sign Language throughout hospital. Preparing and submitting related documentation
• Reviewing, documenting and assisting in scheduling interpreter requests for Sign Language. Preparing, routing and filing related forms and documentation. Making reminder calls to families prior to appointments
• Providing education and training to hospital staff on subjects such as working effectively with an interpreter, cross-cultural communication, and how to use TTY machines. Assisting in creating and preparation of training materials
• Maintaining computerized records of daily activities, including diary of daily patient transactions
• Working as a team with other interpreter staff, assisting in planning work and developing methods for improving service delivery systems
• Orienting, training and supervising volunteer interpreters and student interns as needed

Minimum Qualifications
Education:

• A Bachelor's Degree is required

Experience:

• Minimum of two years of previous experience interpreting, including interpretation in medical settings is required
• Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles
• Strong communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions. Work also requires well developed writing skills
• Written and verbal fluency in both English and the Sign Language of specific population(s) served

Licensure/ Certifications:

• Current Certificate of Interpreting CI and Certificate in Transliterating CT in American Sign Language is required

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
