Job summary

National Interpreting Service, Inc. is seeking a Part-Time Staff ASL Interpreter in Portland, OR to facilitate communication between healthcare professionals and Deaf, DeafBlind and hard-of-hearing patients across clinics and hospitals.

The role requires ASL fluency, RID certification, and a minimum of 2 years in medical settings, with on-site interpretation and occasional after-hours work. Travel outside Portland as needed; HIPAA compliance is mandatory.

Qualifications

• Fluency in English and American Sign Language.
• RID Certified (CI/CT, CSC, NIC, NIC-A, NIC-M, NAD V).
• Minimum 2 years working in medical settings.
• Familiarity with medical terminology, register, discourse styles and cultural factors affecting provider–consumer interactions.
• Oregon Qualified/Certified Healthcare Interpreter through OHA.
• Oregon Supervisory or Generalist and Medical License.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for healthcare professionals and Deaf, DeafBlind and/or hard-of-hearing patients in clinics, surgery centers, ERs and hospitals.
• Maintain patient confidentiality per NIS and HIPAA policies.
• Stay updated on medical terminology, interpretation techniques and relevant regulations.
• Adapt to urgent schedules and on-call needs, including after-hours work.
• Interpret on-site in medical facilities and collaborate with healthcare staff.

Day Rate Non-Exempt

Salary:

Daily rate to commensurate with experience, credentials, and work-schedule.

Location:

Primarily Portland, OR (travel outside of Portland as needed)

Primary Focus:

Medical Interpreting, with additional facets as needed.

Essential Duties:

As an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter with our team, you will play a vital role in facilitating effective communication between healthcare professionals and Deaf, DeafBlind and/or hard-of-hearing patients. Your responsibilities will primarily involve providing clear and accurate interpretation at clinics, surgery centers, emergency rooms and major hospitals, allowing for effective and equitable communication access. Additionally, you may be called upon to assist with interpreting in other contexts as needed (i.e. government, higher education, conference, training, workforce, etc.).

Key Responsibilities:

• Understand and respect cultural nuances within the Deaf community to facilitate understanding and build rapport between patients and medical professionals.
• Be prepared to provide interpretation services during emergency situations, such as medical crises or natural disasters.
• Stay updated on advancements in medical terminology, interpretation techniques, and relevant legislation and regulations through continuous learning and professional development opportunities.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with NIS and HIPAA policies and standards.
• Adapt to changes in scheduling and prioritize assignments based on urgency and importance, efficiently managing time within your designated block to accommodate varying demands.
• Provide services outside of normal working hours on an as-needed basis.
• Willing to interpret on-site in medical facilities.
• Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
• Collaborate with healthcare staff to ensure effective communication and understanding.

Qualifications:

• Fluency in English and American Sign Language
• RID Certified (CI/CT, CSC, NIC, NIC-A, NIC-M, NAD V)
• Minimum 2 years working in medical settings.
• Familiarity of specialized vocabulary, register, discourse styles, triadic communication, and linguistic and cultural influences which may impact the interaction between consumer and provider.
• Oregon Qualified/Certified Healthcare Interpreter through OHA
• Oregon Supervisory (or Generalist) and Medical Licensed

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

• 5 years working in high level medical settings.
• CoreCHI-P (or CoreCHI) National Certification
• MS/MA in related field
