6.5 hours per day, 9 months per year

Qualifications

• Certified by the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), both written and performance OR
• Passed the National Interpreting Certification
• Graduate from an Interpreter Training Program preferred
• Possess a high school degree or comparable equivalent
• Thirty (30) semester credits or forty-five (45) quarter credits from a post‑secondary institution at an accredited university, college, community college or business school
• Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), both voice‑to‑sign and sign‑to‑voice.
• Must demonstrate skills in interview
• Knowledge of Code of Ethics specific to the role of interpreter

Other Requirements

• Ability to lift and move moderately sized objects up to 50 pounds
• Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements

Essential Functions

• Work in a flexible and cooperative manner
• Treat co‑workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times
• Serve as a positive role model for students, and practice the behaviors that are expected of our students
• Ability to move around school facilities with students
• May be reassigned with little or no notice due to nature of work and student schedules
• Assist hearing‑impaired students in mainstream classrooms, interpreting the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher and helping the student ask questions of the teacher
• Work with multiple students or with small groups of students
• Assist the teacher with communicating the lesson plan, working with tutorial groups and helping with supervision
• Work with individuals or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by classroom teachers as a tutor
• Assist hearing‑impaired students in the interaction and communication with hearing students and staff
• Interpret for hearing‑impaired students participating in regular classes, extracurricular events and for adult deaf in conferences
• Ability to voice to sign and sign to voice or cue to voice and voice to cue
• Must be able to drive between schools to address student need when colleague absences are reported
• Must be flexible to reassignment if deaf student is absent for a day or longer
• Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements

Benefits/Compensation

Salary range: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts may receive experience credit towards salary placement.
