Special Education Sign Language Interpreter

Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the program instructor(s) and/or the Program Administrator, this role assists in the supervision of instructional and all other activities by interpreting and tutoring for deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students on an individual and small‑group basis. The position is a permanent, part‑time position with 6.5 hours per day, 190 days per year.

Responsibilities

• Assist program instructor(s) in supervising and working with elementary or secondary students.
• Communicate effectively with students, staff, and the general public.
• Transliterate and/or interpret information accurately to accommodate students’ communication levels.
• Provide instructional and other tutoring support on a one‑to‑one basis and a group basis.
• Maintain a learning environment consistent with course goals and curriculum outcomes.
• Assist in evaluating instruction and providing direction to maximize each student’s potential.
• Implement behavioral management strategies as outlined by the instructor.
• Assist in explaining technical assistance needs for interpreting (lighting, visual aids, positioning, etc.).
• Attend in‑services and workshops to stay current on issues related to deaf culture.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must meet Washington State Requirements for Sign Language Interpreters in Educational Settings; pass the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a score of 4.0 or higher and a passing score on the EIPA written test, or hold a National Interpreting Certificate (NIC) and pass the EIPA written test.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
• Previous knowledge or background in working with students and educational techniques preferred.
• Personal characteristics of flexibility, initiative, cooperativeness, and confidentiality.
• Organizational skills and the ability to follow through on tasks.
• Experience communicating by telephone, TDD, and relay service.
• Willingness to participate in skill‑building workshops and in‑services to improve interpretation and transliteration skills.
• Ability to encourage student independence and avoid inappropriate dependence on the interpreter.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team.

Additional Requirements

• Must meet Paraeducator Employment Requirements: at least 18 years, high school diploma or equivalent, and one of the following—passing score on the ParaPro Assessment, an associate degree or higher from an accredited college, required college credits, or completion of a registered Paraeducator Apprenticeship Program.
