Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) seeks an Industrial Hygienist for the Asbestos Control Program, based in Queens. You will conduct health investigations to ensure compliance with asbestos rules and help reduce fire and health hazards by evaluating egress and protection systems, and implementing control measures.

You will prepare inspection reports, collect samples, interpret lab results, issue violations, and testify at hearings.

Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science and/or safety engineering; or
• A baccalaureate degree including 28 credits in physical or natural sciences, civil/ mechanical/ environmental/ chemical engineering and/or toxicology and one year of full-time experience in the identification, evaluation and control of health and safety hazards; or
• A baccalaureate degree and two years of full-time work experience as described above; or
• A combination of education and experience that is the equivalent of the coursework/experience described, with substitutions as specified; all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree.

Responsibilities

• Conduct safety and health investigations to ensure compliance with Asbestos Rules and Regulations.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports with worksite measurements, diagrams and photographs; collect asbestos samples.
• Interpret laboratory and air sampling reports; issue Notices of Violations and prepare case files.
• Provide testimony at Environmental Control Board Hearings and trials.
• Respond to public reports and emergencies; conduct field and office audits of Asbestos Assessment Reports and related inspections.

Education

Baccalaureate degree with IH credits

Baccalaureate degree with physical/natural sciences credits + 1 year experience

Baccalaureate degree + 2 years experience

Education/Experience equivalence per NY rules
